PINSTRIPING & SIGN WRITING ARTIST,
CAM ALBON

"What I enjoy most about my chosen traditional craft, is the soul in each brush stroke..."

Cam started Southern Alps Pinstriping and Signs in 2016 as a small side business with just a passion for the art and a brush in his hand.

While living in Australia in 2012 Cam learnt how to Airbrush with World Leaders Airbrush Venturi. This later led him to being invited to be a tutor for Airbrush Venturi right here, in Christchurch. He shared his skills and knowledge with many students over the 4 years of running the school.

Being a tutor for AV allowed him a sneak peek into the new course content focusing on Pinstriping - and he fast became a student of the pinstriping course. It was then that he found his true passion - pinstriping. He learnt an immense amount of pinstriping skills from AV and continues to teach himself the traditional ways of pinstriping and sign writing to this day.

"My Father was a cabinet maker/joiner so I've always had a keen interest in old tools and techniques. I grew up with wood working tools in my hands from about the time I could walk and talk. Working with traditional hand tools has taught me a valuable lesson in honing which ever craft I decided to do with my hands.

I’ve also had a passion for just about anything automotive related. Especially vintage cars, machinery, trucks and hotrods - which is where my love for the artwork on these vehicles and equipment really grew. They all helped to capture my creative side."

What Cam enjoys the most about traditional craft is the soul in each brush stroke. Recreating this in the modern day keeps him grounded to the roots of the traditional world, to a time where things worked at a slower pace, attention was given to detail and quality of workmanship was always high.

To create his artworks he uses specialty enamel paints with lettering and Pinstriping brushes brought in from the US/UK, alongside his handmade maul stick.

"I also collect other relics and advertisements, industrial or residential, from a time gone by as a reminder of how things were. I use these relics to fuel my inspiration to create the things I create on a daily basis."
